Take the first Step

Little did I realize as I was guided to rid myself of almost all my belongings and live a nomadic life, that I would soon be shown some very powerful truths. During my journey I asked several women whose teachings I respected, if they would help guide me and all turned me down. I was devastated. It took years for me to understand if they had agreed, I would have learnt what was right for them, not for me. It was only in hindsight that I came to appreciate that what others share through their teachings, is what worked for them, given the path they are on. Each of our journeys is unique to us, so what benefits one may not necessarily work for another.

Over time I finally recognized that the true teachings or the knowledge each of us needs is carried within. Living a nomadic lifestyle forced me to be the outsider wherever I was, and this in turn compelled me to listen to my intuition and do what felt right for me. I soon realized that once I understood the lessons I was to learn, I would be nudged to move on … either to a new job or a new location or a new situation. No matter where I was, the only person I initially knew was me, so I had to become self-reliant. What I learnt felt right for me, so I followed the guidance I was being given, and trusted in myself and the Universe. And the more I did, the more my fear dissipated, and the more I allowed myself to show up as me.

By letting go of what I thought I knew, I discovered a startling truth. We all live our lives according to our internal story. As small children, often the adults around us teach us how they want us to be, whether it fits with our own truth or not. So over time we become conditioned to being “that person”. In the process who we authentically are, is buried so deep we no longer even remember we are someone other than who we have become. And unbeknownst to us, the story we have taken on, shapes how we live, how we think and how we react.

But sometimes who we are being isn’t enough. We know something is amiss but we are uncertain what that is and we are equally unsure how and where to find it. So, we wait, for something, anything to happen. But it doesn’t, until we take the first step on our journey back to who we really are. And that takes courage, because it goes against the grain of who we have been, often for years.

One step, that’s all it takes, but that one step has the ability to change our entire life, if we let it. And the more we move forward, the stronger and surer we become.
